RESEARCH DATA ANALYST

The Position

ATAC has an opening for a Research Data Analyst. This is a full-time mid-level staff position and is located in Washington D.C. The successful candidate will participate in the analysis of aviation data to support research on trajectory-based air traffic performance measures of new NextGen capabilities.
Responsibilities will include:

  • System level analysis and formulation of software designs to project requirements
  • Development and implementation of NAS data processing tools and analysis of trajectory measures
  • Development and analysis of integration of various data sources into databases in support of performance analysis
  • Development of tools that support data verification for FAA trajectory databases
  • Documentation and testing of software
  • Preparing papers and presentations that summarize the data analysis research activities
  • Production of analysis and training materials for FAA offices
  • Working closely with government aviation users/customers

Qualifications

ATAC is looking for career-minded people with the potential to grow professionally and advance into positions of greater technical and project management responsibility.
Required attributes include: 

  • B.S. degree in the area of computer science or other technical field including engineering or other physical sciences
  • Experience with aircraft, air traffic control, traffic flow management, automation, navigation, and/or surveillance systems
  • Air traffic data analytical expertise (especially with air traffic trajectory data and large data sets)
  • Experience with R or other statistical/mathematical analysis software
  • Software programming experience in Java, C, C++, html, and object-oriented methodologies
  • Excellent PC applications skills with office tools including Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills
Desired attributes include: 
  • Software lifecycle development experience that involved requirements analysis, verification and validation, configuration management, and documentation/training
  • Experience with ArcGIS visualization tools and ability to produce toolboxes for aviation data analysis
  • Ability to conduct modeling and/or database-based engineering analysis
  • A strong interest in the aviation field and solid understanding of the National Airspace System (NAS) and future NextGen concepts
