Software Developer

The Position

ATAC has an opening for a full-time Software Developer. This is a full-time staff position and may be located at ATAC headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the Washington DC area office or in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated member of ATAC’s analytical systems development team and will support various research and system development, operations, and maintenance efforts including developing and evaluating methods for processing and analyzing various forms of air traffic control data from existing FAA systems to support multiple data collection, analysis and reporting systems.
Responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with in-house FAA researchers and laboratory personnel, developers, programmers, and other contract support as well as research partners to advance analysis capabilities.
  • Supporting data analyses including automating analysis processes and report generation.
  • Improving and migrating existing software written in legacy languages.
  • Supporting user interface development.
  • Supporting the development of functional requirements.
  • Supporting the creation of software documentation.
  • Supporting all elements of the Software Development Lifecycle.

A background check will be required for this position.


ATAC is looking for a self-starter that can work independently and complete projects with minimum oversight. They must be adaptable and able to learn new coding languages, tools, and technologies as necessary to meet customer needs.
Required attributes include: 

  • A BA/BS degree in engineering, math, or science and 8 or more years of related job experience
  • Strong software development skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
Desired attributes include: 
  • Broad Software Development Lifecycle background/experience
  • Experience on FAA projects or programs pertaining to analytical and/or safety application development
  • Experience developing documentation for complex data systems
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems such as Oracle and Postgres.
  • Knowledge of software languages including Java, Visual Basic (VB).NET, ASP.NET, MVC, C, C#, C++, JavaScript, and HTML.
  • Knowledge of Apache Kafka, Apache HornetQ, and Hibernate.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), and Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)
  • Knowledge of Tableau, Subversion (SVN), and Microsoft.NET Platform.
  • Knowledge of Geographical Information System (GIS) tools such as OpenLayers and Leaflet.
  • Knowledge of FAA System Wide Information Management (SWIM) data services and other FAA air traffic data sources.
  • Knowledge of the current US air traffic management system
